How was your overall experience as a host? You can talk about things you did with your exchange student; how did you prepare for their arrival; did you have any apprehensions about participating?

Our experience was very positive. We prepared by having zoom calls with the student and their family to get to know their needs, interests and concerns. We didn’t have any apprehensions but we certainly had hopes that the student would be a good fit with our child and our family. We were pleasantly surprised with how well things went. Our student was very self reliant but also spent a great deal of time with us.

Did any concerns/issues occur during the exchange and if so, how did you deal with them?

We really didn’t have and issues while our student was with us. She was very responsible and communicative about how she was doing.

Did you have any concerns of sending your child away and if so, how did you deal with them?

We really had no concerns about our child going away. We knew her personality as well has her habits were a good fit for the experience: she is easy to get along with, is self reliant, is very present in experiences and has the ability to create relationships quite easily.

Do you continue to keep in touch with your exchange student and/or their family?

We used WhatsApp to communicate with the exchange family as well as with our child when she was away.

Any advice you would give to future host-parents?

My advice would be to be open to the experience, have a lot of communication with the family before hand and to take a lot of photos (we wished that we would have taken more).
